There Are People Who Would Be Lost Without You!
Ordinary people call Distress Centre Peel.
They may have lost a job or a loved one or be confronting drug
and alcohol problems.
In every case our callers feel they have nowhere else to turn.
When you choose to become a phone volunteer you help
make sure there is someone who they can turn to.
You won't get many phone calls that are more important.
Do I Need Special Qualifications?
To be a phone volunteer you need patience. You need compassion and empathy.
You need common sense and you need to care.
You need to be reliable and be able to listen without judging.
What Kind of Training Do I Get?
You get special training to improve your analytical and
communication skills, particularly in the art of listening.
Training is conducted in small groups by qualified staff and
volunteers. Your full training includes role playing and
mentored shifts.
You will come away from your training with new and
intensified skills that will serve you well beyond
your time here.
What's My Commitment
Every volunteer is asked to be there twelve hours a month,
spread over four or more shifts.
